Getting Started with Your Pilsner Home Brew

Are you ready to dive into the wonderful world of home brewing? If you're looking for a straightforward and delicious recipe, a simple Pilsner using liquid malt extract (LME) is an excellent choice! Not only is it easy to follow, but it provides a refreshing and crisp beer that everyone will enjoy. Let’s get brewing!

Ingredients You’ll Need

Before we jump into the brewing process, let’s make sure you have all the necessary ingredients. For a 5-gallon batch of Pilsner, gather the following:

  • 6.6 lbs of liquid malt extract (LME)

  • 1 lb of corn sugar (for a slight sweetness and extra flavor)

  • 1 oz of Saaz hops (for flavoring)

  • 1 oz of Hallertau hops (for aroma)

  • 1 packet of Pilsner yeast (try lager yeast if you prefer a more traditional touch)

  • Water (make sure it’s clean and good quality)

These ingredients are essential for brewing your own refreshing Pilsner at home!

The Brewing Process: Step-by-Step

Now that you have your ingredients ready, it’s time to get brewing! Follow these simple steps:

  1. Boil the wort: In a large pot, bring around 2.5 gallons of water to a boil. Once boiling, add the 6.6 lbs of liquid malt extract and stir until dissolved. Bring the mixture back to a boil.

  2. Add hops: After 10 minutes of boiling, add the 1 oz of Saaz hops. Continue to boil for another 30 minutes. Then, add the 1 oz of Hallertau hops, and boil for an additional 15 minutes.

  3. Cool the wort: After you finish boiling, it’s crucial to cool the wort quickly. You can do this by placing the pot in an ice bath or using a wort chiller if you have one.

  4. Fermentation: Once the wort is cool, transfer it to a sanitized fermenter. Top off with water to get to a total volume of 5 gallons. If using liquid yeast follow instructions, and for dry yeast make sure to rehydrate before pitching. Seal the fermenter with an airlock and place it in a dark, cool area.

  5. Racking: I like to do a racking after one week of fermentation. Then after fermentation has stopped. You have the option of adding fining agents for clarifying the beer. Then perform a second racking.

  6. Bottle your Pilsner: After about two weeks, the fermentation should be complete. Sanitize your bottles, and transfer your beer into them, adding a bit more sugar (about 3/4 cup) to carbonate the beer. Cap each bottle and let them condition for another two weeks.

And there you have it! Your very own home-brewed Pilsner brewed simply with liquid malt extract. Enjoy it chilled with friends or by yourself. Remember, brewing beer is as much about patience as it is about the process, so take your time, and enjoy the rewarding experience!
